Hi, I just bought a mk1 v6 auto galaxy. When I first got it the mpg was really bad, but found the air filter was clogged up pretty bad, once changed I now get around 18mpg in stop / start driving around towns / cities and have been getting 23-25 on average doing casual driving on A roads and dual carriage ways but should get more as this was a short run. Put your foot down though and you will see the petrol gauge start moving down, but the sound is nice

Average solo driving = 26-28mpg, 2 x adults + 2 kids = 25 ish mpg, attach anything to the towbar always 18 mpg no matter what speed I do

I've got the manual version and it's great for hacking off the youffs at the lights

I have ran a v6 Galaxy for the last 6 years. One piece of free advice for you is, try and get one with LPG if you can, or have it converted to LPG. I had my current one done earlier this year, and it's great! The conversion cost

hiya,

I've had both the v6 and 2.3, 1 preceding the other, and I can honestly say the 2.3 is the far superior engine in town. yes the v6 is great on the motorway where in my experience the 2.3 is pants.

however given the choice again I would take the 2.3 any day. the v6 always felt heavy around town. and yes you will struggle to get much over 20mpg with the v6.

in summary: the 2.3 is pokey

the 2.8 v6 is a lumbering oaf.

If you are looking at the V6 auto and have sufficient funds, I would recommend considering the Mk2 over the Mk1. There was a substantial engine change going from a 12V 178bhp engine to a 24V 204bhp. The later engine is also more economical. The gearbox also improved from a four speed to a five speed with a tiptronic style change. I have had both and certainly noticed the difference when I upgraded.

I have a Mk2 2.3 Auto and it's fine - we get around 30mpg average. Nice to drive, as Mumble Bee says, around town especially.

If I could have found one at the time (in the right spec.), I would have gone for a V6 - nice burble and all that.

Don't worry too much about mpg - depreciation will make a bigger dent in your wallet, unless you're buying at the 'bargain' end of the market.
